HCV Program

Housing Choice Voucher Program (Formerly Known as Section 8)

The Housing Choice Voucher Program is a federally funded income-based rent subsidy program that helps low-income families, elderly persons, veterans and disabled individuals afford housing in the private market. The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) assigns vouchers to Local Public Housing Authorities to administer the program throughout the country. PHA’s subsidize a portion of the voucher holder’s monthly rent directly to the landlord through a Housing Assistance Payment contact.

AMHA currently is assigned 481 housing choice vouchers. Our program is an application / waiting-list based program. The rules and regulations of the program are based off the Administrative Plan. This is a Policy passed by the Board of Commissioners based off HUD rules and regulations as well as Ohio Tenant Landlord Law.

Security deposits are determined by the landlords and the responsibility of the participating family.

After completing a one-year lease, voucher holders may move including utilizing their voucher anywhere in the United States (this process is called portability).

Keeping your Housing Choice Voucher involves ongoing responsibilities, also known as Family Obligations, that you must fulfill as a participant in the program in order to continue to receive rent subsidy.

AMHA does not have any emergency housing vouchers. All applicants must go through the waiting list.
